second book on music 'Samgithasasthramritham', published
by Poorna Publications (TBS), Kozhikode, (tbsbook@vsnl.com)
in Malayalam, cronicles the origins of Karnatic Music;
full details on its elements such as Nadam, Sruthi, Swaram,
Sthayi, Ragam, Thalam and Ganam and 48 Nos. of various
forms of Ganams, viz. Geetham, Varnam, Swarajathi, Jathiswaram,
Krithi, Kirthanam, Padam, Javali, Thillana and Ragamalika
with the Text, Meaning and Swaras of each musical composition.
It also deals with the relationship of Karnatic Music
with other forms of music, viz. Kathakali Music, Kootiyattam
Music, Hindusthani Music and Western Music. The book also
contained detailed life-history of 33 well-known composers,
detailed descriptions of 60 famous Ragas and brief descriptions
of 175 ragas. Lauded as a very useful book for connoisseurs,
practitioners and students, by well known critic Prof.
S.Gupthan Nair, renowned musician Padmasree. Neyyattinkara
Vasudevan and Sangithacharyan Prof. Mavelikkara Prabhakara
Varma, the book is released for sale in July 2005. It
